Thanks to everyone who shared insightful comments on the recent Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher scripted remark.
Staying relevant and still all in good humor with regards to my standing opinion on it (which seems to have unleashed a hornet’s nest of haters and even personal attacks), I share this gem by Shy Theerakulstit, who carefully (re-)explains how we Asians shall,
…strike with the white hot fury of a thousand ninja warriors riding on samurai, wrapped up in shaolin monks.

ASIANS: The Asian Response to Asian Responders
Praise be to buddha.
Addendum [Friday, Oct 5th, 2007 at 8:21 pm]:
Quoting Mike Villar on his post “An Open Letter of Apology to the Cast and Crew of Desperate Housewives”,
Showing a modicum of class when you’re not required to is a tough act; so you guys can only imagine my surprise when your network issued a public apology for your little “racial slur.â€
I know it should’ve been water under the bridge now but there seemed to be a call for blood and a major brouhaha even after your public apology was issued.
Now, I believe in the power of forgiveness and in the same manner that you apologized to us, I would like to apologize to you on behalf of my countrymen who do not have the intellectual capacity to understand satirized humor.
I salute you, Mike. Ya’ got balls, too. I stand with you on the above statement. So I guess we’re both on the lynch mob’s hit list.
I’ll be damned, but I don’t know why I wasn’t able to make the connection to Avenue Q’s “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist” right away! Basapa did. In fact, I had plans to catch Avenue Q two weeks ago, right here in Manila at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium (RCBC Theater). I don’t expect everyone to “get it”, too.

i get your point.
there are other far more important issues to discuss other than this. so no need to get so worked up..right?
ok.
but then, that insulting line was said in television, from a very popular series with over (who knows what) a million viewers.
its ok though to get annoyed, insulted. even a little. for just a while.
weren’t you?
we’ll get over the issue.
of course we will.
after the apology, then its done.

I was incensed and indignant when I first watched the DH video clip. However, when I sobered down, I began to think. While I found Susan Myers’ (Teri Hatcher’s character)statement downright offensive, I began to wonder why the scriptwriters would write something like that.
Let’s face it, we’re still recovering from the scandal over the 2006 Board Exams for Nurses. Some years back, there was that controversy regarding the Fatima Med school grads who got near-perfect scores in the medical board exams. Now, I’m sure that some Americans are aware of the issues I have just mentioned. Plus, we have diploma mills in our country. We cannot deny this fact. I’m certain that Americans are also aware of this. And then there’s the Recto Ave. diploma factory …
I used to work in a call center. Our American Culture trainer, an American himself, once told us that Americans tend to generalize. It’s one of their quirks as a people. Remember the Little League scandal over a decade ago? We were called a nation of cheaters by an American reporter whose name now escapes my memory. I was one of those who was foaming at the mouth because of that remark. I, for one, am not a cheater. It’s just sad that the misdeeds of a few can define us as a nation.
We should protest and express our indignation, but we should not stop there. I think the best thing that we can do about this is prove to Americans and the rest of the world that we are more than what they think we could ever be. I believe that what we need to do is to build a culture of excellence and honesty; this is far more important than ranting and raving.
I still think ABC and the producers of DH owe us an apology. What Susan Myers said was unethical because it was disparaging to medical practitioners who graduated from Philippine med schools. We cannot simply shrug our shoulders and say, “It’s just a show. We poke fun at Americans anyway.” Sure we do, but our shows do not enjoy the same level of popularity all over the world compared to American shows like DH. I mean, ask a Japanese, an Englishman or a Norwegian if he watches “Wowowee.” Chances are you’ll get a blank stare. But ask the same man if he knows about DH and he will be more likely to say yes. Furthermore, that infamous line from an immensely popular show is a virtual advertisement. It can set the climate for Filipino medical practitioners who work abroad.
Well, EJ, I respect your opinion, and I don’t hate you for it. I hope that we, Filipinos and Americans alike, learn to respect one another.

By the way, I don’t think Americans should insult or poke fun at us. I don’t think we, Filipinos, should insult or poke fun at Americans either. There, I think I’ve said too much. I just hope this issue will be put to rest.
EJ Says: Hi, Diane. Thanks for your comments. I’m really sorry to hear about Sylvester. I hope your bro is okay.

Hi, everyone. Especially those “pearls among swine”. I’m sure you know who you are, so I don’t have to enumerate.
It is moot to hope that even the tiniest glimmer of enlightenment will dawn on those who will never, ever know any better (or refuse to). They either can’t, don’t, or won’t. This thread of comments is testament to just that. But hey, I tried.
However, I am definite that my trying to make our stand on this issue easier for the others to grasp will simply be adding fuel to a fire I do not need. I have wasted enough of my time on this. So here, I leave this thread to those who still have a taste for it, be you a pearl or swine.
Maybe I will try again when I feel up to it, possibly on a different topic I find interesting. Hopefully, it will be one that does not attract individuals I would rather do without.
Thanks for your time! ¡Hasta luego!

Honestly, I share the same sentiment with you. It’s satiric if one can have that attitude to comprehend that it’s a TV series and not a documentary. Therefore I commend Mike Villar for having accounted for the misconstrued public. Why don’t we just go on with our lives?
As for me, I haven’t even blogged on it due to the triviality. Unlike the Malu Fernandez issue, a Filipino dumping on Filipinos.
Just blog hopping. God bless

Hi, Ner.
Thanks for posting that on your blog. I love it! I can really relate to that right now…

so.. much.. anger
October 15th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
Magpalit ka na ng nationality… Di mo kailangang ipamukha sa lahat ng mga Pilipino na maging open sa mga ganung jokes, kasi below the belt yun. Remember, jokes are half meant.
October 15th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
Hahaha. I now understand that in a new light! Great, EJ.
October 16th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
It’s a JOKE! You guys have no sense of humor, and apparantly no life’s to get but-hurt over a damn joke. The JOKER would be so PISSTI at all yous. he HATES It when jokes have to be explained to those too wit-less to get it.

Damn! I lost what I wrote…. Retrieving from my thoughts…
The problem with reading “comments” is that when you read really nasty remarks you hold back and think twice. Should I level with them? Or should I just write with my eyes close because some remarks are just downright horrid? The thing about me is however bitchy and neurotic I am, I still maintain my sanity and glamour. Believe me I try extra hard!
Have we lost our sense of humor? Or have we just lost our sense? We are so intense with our clamor for trivial things that we are blinded on what’s really going out there. Do we really have to raise hell (and even curse) to show our anger? Do we have to insult EJ because he writes what he wants to address? Btw, we are just readers! In case you forget even if we receive all the apologies in the world for all the insults that we received, our country will not rise to the top and get rich. I say trivial because we have so problems that need solutions rather than chant in harmony for those who offended us.
Last Sunday I went to mass (Singapore) and the priest somewhat mentioned “irresolvable poverty in Africa or Philippines”. It doesn’t sound right that we are seated to the likes of Africa (no offense meant to Africans!). I just prayed hard that he has the perfect excuse for that but at the end of the day I have to admit we’re not swimming in money and chocolates. I just went home thinking of ways to do something though I am here in Sing. I guess for starters, I am the bagong bayani!
Yeah, I didn’t notice that what I wrote is rather lengthy. Well, I am not behaving tonight because reading this thread appalled me. We don’t even say respectable things to our kapwa pinoy. Gosh. For those who can’t comment without cursing, I have a few things to say. Leave EJ alone. Get a life. Join a cult. Watch Porn. Have sex. Or just drown in ice cold water. Basta mellow down for Godsakes! Because clearly, you left your sense of humor somewhere else and your literary comment will not make you a Filipino sa puso’t diwa…………
October 19th, 2007 at 11:13 am
Anger is a gift. Use it in a more constructive way.. Show the world what Filipino people can do. Does cursing, trash talking can do better to you and your nation? Instead of posting your non-constructive statements here and showing how worst you are that what you are saying, better not do it.
