Below is my video response to what seems to be the buzz of the hour for many Filipinos online. It’s potentially a viral video, following suit to the likes of the recent Malu Fernandez issue.
Here’s the video I responded to, “Teri Hatcher insults Filipinos”:
On YouTube, user buddymigs who posted the video describes it as,
In the Premiere of Desperate Housewives Teri Hatcher made a remark about Filipinos - doctors/nurses. She was talking to her doctor and then she said,
“Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”

ej padero… teri hatcher could have been more critical and sensitive when it comes to choosing what script she could deliver on the show.
i am not a whiner! we are not whiners!

We Filipinos are not over reacting to this video, I came from a family of doctors also and is also planning to take medicine as a course in college. The video is harsh, it definitely hurt us. Filipino doctors STUDY for their own carrier they don’t just lie around saying their scripts without thinking who might be offended. WE ARE NOT WHINING about this video.

Excuse me, but i just HAPPEN to be a fil-am studying medicine in the PHILIPPINES, along with my sister, cousin and friend who are all filipino american. Of course this is an insult, we take our education very seriously and eventually will come back to the states and practice medicine. If she would have said INDIA, MEXICO, CARIBBEAN (countries that feed the US with foreign medical graduates) I guarantee each doctor that graduated abroad that practices in the states now, would have been offended.
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:17 pm
we Filipinos are not over reacting sa script ni Teri, marami sa ating mga kababayan ang CANT afford na makapag pa doctor sa ibng bansa lalo na sa US kaya sa mga PILIPINO doktors na lng cla nagpapagamot karamihan pa sa lugar ay libre ang consultation and yet sabihin mo na nag oover react ang mga pinoy? bakit anong nationality ba ang doktor mo?

The problem with you is that you are not a Filipino doctor working in the United States. You don’t know how it is to have to work doubly hard in order to be “at par” with American grads. You don’t know how it is to be asked by your patient “which med school did you graduate from” just because you’re non-White and because you have the slightest hint of an accent. Filipino MDs in the US have risen to esteemed positions like medical directors and chief residents. This proves that we are just as good as the Americans and graduates of other countries like India and Jordan. I myself have been appointed chief resident of my program. An irresponsible comment like that takes s back hundreds of years backwards. It will cast a doubt on the Filipino MDs and RNs who are working here in the US. Let me ask you, where did your MD graduate from, “some med school in the Philippines?” Likely. Ask him or her what she thinks of that comment. See if it’s “overreacting.” You’re not part of the solution. You’re part of the problem.
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Come on Mr EJ, as a Filipino, is that video not sensitive to you , a doctor at that? What made you say that we Filipinos reacting to the issue are whiners? Or is it you trying to get noticed by the Americans with your comment downplaying that serious “panlalait” to Phil medical profession, in particular, and to the Filipinos, in general.
Where did you finish and get your diploma as a doctor? If in the Philippine school, well, i pity you, because you can’t even defend your own turf. If you graduated from school outside the Philippines, still, i pity you because can’t even defend your very family, them being filipinos(i suppose).
Im not a doctor, but being a filipino, and having seen and heard your stand on the issue, all i can say is that, you are trying to win somebody’s favor by putting down your own race. Your act indeed, is very ingratiating. Come on stand-up, reconsider yourself and be counted.
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:52 pm
You are wise for recognizing that stupidity and immediately rejecting its very existence.
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:54 pm
I don’t think Filipinos are whiners. We are a sensitive race and takes pride of who we are. I am in the medical field and this comment is just not fair to all of us who studied hard and fried our neurons just for someone to insult or make fun of our profession.
This maybe a joke but its a bad joke. And bad is bad.
GOD bless..
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:55 pm
THIS IS WORSE THAN WHAT ISAIAH WASHINGTON DID!!! THE WRITERS NEEDS TO BE REPRIMANDED, THE PRODUCERS AS WELL FOR ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN!!!
October 4th, 2007 at 1:05 am
Hi EJ! This is not an issue whether Americans have similar jokes on themselves or not. This actually raises a web of issues. First, issue of ignorance. The scriptwriter, by including that supposed-to-be joke in the script, is evidently ignorant about the policies, performances, and even the nature of medical schools in the Philippines. It goes to show that their show is not based on a well-researched topic. Secondly, it is an insult to the Filipino healthcare practitioners especially those in the US. However trivial you may perceive it, it is still an insult and a responsible and non-apathetic social individual will never shrug off such a non-trivial aspect of discrimination. And lastly, it is an issue of sheer capitalism. Just for the show to move on, it would not care if it would hurt, not just a few people, but a nation. All that for monetary gain for ABC!
October 4th, 2007 at 1:28 am
c’mon ej it seems you’re not a filipino, it’s very natural for filipinos to react on this deragatory statement because by nature filipinos are intelligent and sensitive human beings. maybe you’re american born that’s why you are “stay cool” type. but to say filipino doctors are dumb is very unacceptable. if you were in their shoes and call you “dumb” can you accept it? eventhough it’s not true? c’mon pal think about it. yes we’re poor country but we deserve respect in international community. just don’t let anybody push us around. think about it.

October 4th, 2007 at 2:20 am
dude you are the man…. it is just a show for those who were offended… the video was just a segment (maybe there is validity on what Terri mentioned) it shouldn’t hurt us filipinos kasi we know better — magaling tayo. matatag tayo. comment is a comment/criticism. let us not be driven by the wave of many. para ayon lang eh. ipakita mo filipino kang magaling. yaan nyo pag nagkasakit sya ng tunay at tayo ang hinabulan nya ng tulong ay di tutulong tayo… yan ang filipino!!!
October 4th, 2007 at 2:40 am
October 4th, 2007 at 3:00 am
hmmmm. for me we are over reacting. even the government wants an apology. even rob schneider, who is half filipino had a joke in his movie about this filipino guard who couldn’t figure out how to use a scanner. i forgot what it was though. it also reflects our society, with the nursing leakage, etc. talagang bad impression tayo around the world.
October 4th, 2007 at 6:11 am
YOU ARE ONE SENSIBLE PINOY … congratulations on being the most sensible guy to react to this “Desperate Housewives” episode.
Racism will always exist in this world and the only thing that can prevent it is how we truly believe in our own Pinoy dignity and pride. It doesn’t matter what others think of us … it matters more how we think of ourselves.
October 4th, 2007 at 6:49 am
Earn your respect.
October 4th, 2007 at 7:26 am
are you a filipino? I guess not? if yes, i guess by blood only or citizenship but not by heart.i think you are lack common sense about this. did you finish any education. i ask this because i don’t if i still have to explain this to you in order for your small mind to comprehend it. but just says so and i will try to be patient in explaining in your moron leveled IQ.I THINK YOU ARE A SON OF A BITCH/WHORE!!!!!! hey don’t be sensitive about it.it’s just a joke.
October 4th, 2007 at 7:28 am
I understand your view point… oh wait a minute…I DONT! I agree with what Ana and Mastudi said. I am also taking medicine as a course in college. Also, I work in a hospital that recruit many Filipino nurses (doctor in the P.I.) and I know, from what i see, that they work really hard. So, your telling EVERYONE (Pinoy or not) that this is not a drugatory comment and that we should not do anything about it or make a big deal out of it. First of all I dont know you and I don’t know if your really pinoy at heart or not but if you know any Filipinos that is a nurse or a doctor here in the U.S. you would understand, what they would feel going to work the next day after everyone from there unit had watched the “desprate housewives” episode, or would you? What would they feel or the patient would feel if they think that Filipino doctors or nurses are incompetent. Well think about that would you and get back at me if you have any comments.
October 4th, 2007 at 7:30 am
……joke lang yan.heheheheverything is joke right likeyou are
October 4th, 2007 at 8:15 am
You suck! you mother fucking, cock sucking moron…get lost you fucking loser! you are a motherfucking disgrace to mankind…i bet you are a big loser at school and you don’t have a girl friend and you always pay for sex…LOSER…no joke…you really look like a loser….seriously…get a life bro!
October 4th, 2007 at 8:20 am
fuck you EJ! suck my dick!suck my dick! like your mom and dad did…
EJ: Hi, Mark and individuals like you. Wow. So are you showing the world that YOU are truly Filipino and I’m not? Haha! Thanks for all your comments, repapips. I think we can do a fair enough analysis now, more or less, by summing up the reactions thus far.
October 4th, 2007 at 8:29 am
my first question, why won’t you allow the youtube viewers to comment on your comment? are you afraid that many will also react your comment?.. coward!!!…agitot!
yes, it might be true that some filipinos also made jokes about the americans but to seen or heard on TV, i defintely doubt that… i don’t know if you’re know the difference.. or sensetive enough to notice it.
EJ: Hi. Simple. So that those who would like to comment on my video will do so here, on my website. It’s actually easier here because you don’t need any membership (unlike on YouTube) - it’s very democratic, I’ve let anyone show me and others their true colors by what they say and how they say it. Lastly, so that all comments on my video are consolidated, in one place.
October 4th, 2007 at 9:53 am
Your name must be EJ PANADERO!
Insensitive guy..
EJ: Haha! Having gone to an all-boys grade school, I’ve heard ‘em all. Panadero, kartero, karpintero, jakolero, kantotero… Just suffix the -ero to whatever your wonderful imagination can come up with. Lahat yan, luma na sa akin. Hehe.
Oh, and your point is? Wala ka ba ibang masabi? Got anything relevant?
Thanks for your feedback.
October 4th, 2007 at 11:32 am
slightly or mildly derogatory??? ever heard of the term “ridicule”?
that’s your own opinion dude. unfortunately, most filipinos think otherwise. The show is shown all over the world.. in fact, that show is very popular here in the Philippines. The show’s got many Filipino fans… and for us, Filipino fans, to hear that “trivial” line was really an insult! these last couple of decades, we have been trying to establish ourselves and put the Philippines back in the map. that is, to bring honor to our country. people all over the world have heard and seen it. and because it’s “trivial”, they’ll probably take it as a fact. dude, we all have a point, but it doesn’t mean that we are right. it’s difficult to rationalize when one country’s honor is already involved..

[...] Video Response to “Teri Hatcher Insults Filipinos†[...]
October 4th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
Thank you for taking the time to post a response to the “Terri Hatcher” scene. I agree with you completely! That is such a big problem in our society, the fact that people take everything so damn seriously! I like to think that I have a good sense of humor and it is refreshing to see when others do too. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Marcie Greenwell
EJ: Thank YOU, Marcie. I really appreciate feedback, be it positive or negative - because it means someone has interacted.
I especially like the fact that you used the term “OUR society”, as in the HUMAN or GLOBAL society, regardless of race or nationality. We are all on the same rock, pretty much stuck here together.
Barriers like the one created by racists on one hand and those paranoid about anything to do with race, religion, sexuality, etcetera, on the other, should be done away with. Humor and an open mind will definitely help us all get along.
The irony about “common sense” is that it is not common.
October 4th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
I agree, “some” Filipinos are over reacting. There are huge numbers or racist comments out there, be it against Fil or any nationality we shouldn’t be too sensitive about it.
It is how you take it, in my own understanding Teri Hatcher is just making a point to make sure that her doctor graduated from a decent med school in the PI. You can’t deny that we have “some” crap med school in the PI (not to mention board exam leakage), again “SOME”.
Think again, there are far more better issues we can debate about like our economy and making a big fuss out of some racist comment will not help at all. Yes it is quite disrespectful specially for those of on the same field and I completely understand that you guys are just trying to defend our reputation but c’mon be logical, you know you didn’t graduate from just “some” med school in the PI. You should know better than this.
Mga kababayan let us try and keep an open mind on this or any future issues alike.
October 4th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Whiners or not, overreacting or not, I firmly believe that an apology from the series is in order. It’s just like something when you’re in kindergarten, you said something bad or harmful to others, you say sorry. Do you remember it or were you absent when your teacher taught it?
I think you have a point, but come on, you have to agree that the Filipinos who are “paranoid” for you have a point too. When I first heard about that woman’s comment, I thought to just put it aside and it’s not worth my time to read, watch or even comment about it. But deep inside I know that comment hurt me quite a bit. That’s why I’m here commenting.
You know why these people are hurt, “paranoid” and demand an apology? It’s because they LOVE their country and they take pride in it. For you to understand it, for example we belittle your mom, dad or your whole family in worldwide TV assuming that you love them? What would you feel? Will you tell your grandma, grandpa, aunt or uncle to stop being paranoid and sensitive when they demand an apology to us? I’ll tell you you’re crazy if you tell them that. Because some of us, believe it or not, that’s how greatly we love our country — whether consciously or unconsciously. We love almost or the same level how we love our families.
With regards to your comment on #23, who are you kidding? It’s quite obvious you want to “market” your site and increase your exposure since 1997. Is signing up for membership of youtube too hard? And are the comments in youtube not democratic enough for you and people there aren’t showing their true colors? Double Duh! Well, I know it because it takes one to know one. Haha!
MORE POWER TO ALL FILIPINOS OUT THERE!
KEEP ROCKIN’ AND SHOW THE WORLD PARTICULARLY U.S. THAT WE’RE SOOOO DAMN GOOD!!!
October 4th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Hi Bianca, I really appreciate your response. You have a valid point and again I will say the same thing, overreacting will do us no good. I don’t know how much do I have to stress on that.
I have nothing against our country and I’m proud to be a Filipino. Believe me, if there’s anyone who should know the topic better it is me. By experience…
One good example, I was at a dinner/meeting with CEO’s, financial controller yada yada yada… A bit fancy and I was the only Filipino at that night. So anyway, to make the story short.. this british guy was indirectly insulting Filipinoes, “IN FRONT OF ME” saying statements like how Filipinoes can never be successful in life and all that shit. I was so pissed that night and looking at my police record any slight act of violence will give me a life in prison and deported. I can always choose to retaliate but I didn’t… why? Because I will be just as stupid as he is if I did. I know where I came from and definitely know where I stand. I’m not saying fight is the only solution but whites always get the credit. So there’s no way I can squeeze an apology from this guy and wouldn’t want to jeopardize my career in the process.
Same thing goes out to this topic. Get your facts straight, let’s go back and find out why are we even working abroad… If we can only support our family by just working in our so called “Philippines” then none of this would have happened in the first place.
So you can be all patriotic and idiotic about this issue but believe you and me it will do us no good. Besides, the statement just goes out to “SOME med school in the philippines”.
October 4th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
October 4th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
October 4th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
“some” or no “some”, by mentioning the term “Philippines” would still leave a wrong connotation to the people in the US.
when one says “some med school” means nothing maybe, but “some med school in the Philippines” is another thing. others (Filipino or not) may think of it differently.
I am not a doctor, but I had my fair share of racist remarks. Did anyone with different race has told you “Where are you from? Are you from some call center in the Philippines? I want to speak with an American, I don’t think you understand me”
Masakit yun. Put it in the medical field.
“Can I check you’re diploma? I just wanna make sure it’s not from some med school in the Philippines”
October 4th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
You are such a jerk! how could you! Pinoy ka pa naman! Duh?
Filipino people are patriotic, we all have a nationalistic towards our country! tapos ikw nagsasabi kang OA naman ang mga nagre-react?
October 4th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Yes it maybe similar when some american shows makes a joke or insults american as well. Well this is what i have to say about that,Mr. EjPadero, if youre american or a filipino born in america, just make sure that evrytime you make jokes, be sure to keep it to youre fuckin american race. You people are worthless.
October 4th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Another thing EJpadero, FILIPINOS are far more different from AMERICANS. Americans are the lowest type of creature in the insect family…Oh sory, are they human? Maybe Filipinos are the ones who invented the word, EDUCATED, SENSITIVITY AND MORALE. Coz i honestly dont see americans bearing these factors. Americans are the lowest type of Gods creation,,, iwell,,, i dont even know if they really are Gods creation…HaHAHA..
October 4th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Bsta its not a joke…bkit natawa k ba sa cnbi niya? Punch line ba yun?
October 4th, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Why do Filipinos speak as if they aren’t guilty of the same crime(worse, I should say). Look at our own sitcoms here in the Philippines. It shows how many people in the Philippines are blatantly racist towards their ethnic minorities and people of lower social class. Watch bubble gang, wowowee, and eat bulaga. Be sensitive and you’ll see what I mean.
Double standards, ha?!
This is so blown out of proportion.
October 4th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Hi there EJ,
Know what it’s really hurting to know why some of us Filipinos can easily lack “true” sense of nationality and pride. Let me elaborate as you read why the word “true” is emphasized
On the other hand, I somehow understand where your comment (”Filipino as whiners”) is coming from. Oo nga naman, everything is relative as they say, kanya-kanyang pananaw lang yan at interpretation. Kaya lang….(-definitely me kaya lang)…. Am not here to pick an argument tho just like the others, perhaps this comment may enlighten you or give you a different or added insight. Looking in a different perspective, you may be telling that Hatcher’s statement is just among the many so called “racial statement” and we shouldnt be bothered unless it’s true. Guess, we really shouldn’t be (oo nga naman why give a damn, she’s not God) but here it is : KAYA LANG- that is if PHILIPPINES is a country which is as powerful as the others (e.g USA). Call her line or the script again a relative statement however, it wouldn’t have blown out of proportion if the world doesn’t consider our country a minority. YES! ej, our country is considered a MINORITY among the many and to be publicly challenged by a person whom I presumed has a limited knowledge of our race would really create a big snowball. YES! WE FILIPINOS know we’re GOOD, we really ARE but again it’s hard to penetrate and tell the whole world that we are (can you just imagine the song, film, art festivals we’ve tried so hard to join and win). We don’t only go to other countries to sweat our ass out but to prove that we are CAPABLE. TRUTH IS WE’RE CAPABLE but it so god-damn hard to show that. Why? Because, we’re so AFRAID to refute, thing is we supress ourselves saying “ok lang alam mo naman sa sarili mo kung gano ka kagaling” but should it forever be like that? Since that is the case, to hear and watch someone implying that we are incapable makes it doubly hard and hurting because they never or nearly have to exert a lot of effort to show that. We are not whiners, as you imply all races experience such. But TRUTH IS: EVERYBODY DESERVES RESPECT.
About your experience dining with a British CEO, that is quite un-Filipino coz TRUTH is: you didnt even bother to stand and refute. There are circumstances in life worth fighting for even if means losing a job. It’s not only a matter na alam mo sa sarili mo na ika’y Pinoy, act like one i guess
Ives ( a proud Palaweña)
October 4th, 2007 at 8:23 pm
hey EjPadero your’e a gook (racist word to asian by whites, sa pilipino ugok )you know well whites in the states as well as in other parts of the world are known to be racist, I find teri hatcher derogatory words racist. Racism in the the US is alive and well, blacks in particular bear the brunt of the nauseating racist attitude of some whites. What Teri hatcher said in the desparatehousewives episode was just a symptom of the continuing problem of racism against people of color in the usa. We filipinos should not tolerate such derogatory words. Ej do you part to help end or at least minimize racism in america.
EJ Says: Get your definition on “gook” straight. Do you know any Vietnamese people? They should slap you silly. Pho is delicious!

October 4th, 2007 at 11:31 pm
Hey EJ. I’d just like to say that the video clip from the show, regardless of its actual intentions, was really controversial. It enticed a lot of people, therefore it isn’t merely an issue of overreacting. I’m not in med-school but I was set aback when I saw it. Some people might have been immersed to these types of “insensitive” jokes but the conservative orientation of Filipinos detest it. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. It may be acceptable to some but it’s unacceptable to others. Come on, it’s just a matter of common courtesy. Isn’t the Philippines an ally of the U.S.? Isn’t the U.S. benefitting from brilliant Filipinos while the Philippines herself suffers from Brain Drain, scarcity of resources and employment, being a “puppet” of the U.S. and all that? I respect your opinion but I believe it’s wrong to disregard the reactions of others especially the Filipino doctors. Don’t make the same mistake the show did by thinking it’s OK or it’s just for laughs when in fact it’s not. Having an open mind is not as important as having the right mind. I’m just pointing this out. It’s a major logical fallacy…

Hello EJ,
i have live here in america for 15 yrs. yes i agree with you about filipino made some harsh comments about americans but to do it in television nation wide is foul to me,magiging katatawanan na naman dito sa america itong comment na ito lalo na sa trabaho at we have so many filipino doctors and nurses here that excels in their professions even thou this is just a joke later on this would hunt our filipino doctors and nurses who are thriving to do their best, i’m sensing that you have not been here in america kasi kung dito ka nakatira at dito ka nakabase you would not ignore this. descrimination here is too much.brother we are just protecting the image of all filipino here in america like me protecting the image of my children.thank you
October 5th, 2007 at 2:11 am
We are not whiners. We are just trying to straighten out the facts. Where do they get their basis on that stupid dialogue. As far as I know no Filipino doctor has ever made a malpractice act in the US. The American doctors on the other hand eat lawsuits for breakfast. It’s natural for them to get sued simply because they lack the knowledge, skills and critical thinking. The health care system in the US won’t survive without the Filipino doctors, nurses, physical therapists, lab techs ect. Unless you’re in the medical field you have no right to post a video commentary like that. Shame on you!
October 5th, 2007 at 2:17 am
You’re dead wrong EJ. Filipino doctors and nurses earned it hard to be called DOCTORS and NURSES. They should be highly respected. Yes, I agree with you it’s not like we don’t joke with other ethnics but we keep it among us filipinos. We don’t let the whole world know. I think we’re more sensetive when it comes to degrading other nationality. It’s time that Americans respect the filipinos. They know filipinos are intelligent human beings and they don’t want us or anyone to surpass them.

October 5th, 2007 at 5:40 am
Hi Ives.
I think it is Triskelion who dined with the CEO’s, and not EJ.
Hi Triskelion,
I also appreciate your response to my response.
You keep on repeating that overreacting will do us no good. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you on that 100%. But I would just like to say that like beauty, classifying whether a person’s reaction to a matter/issue as an overreaction or not is in the eye of the beholder. What may be an overreaction for you may not be an overreaction for me or for the others, and vice-versa. So in connection with this topic, you or other people may find some people (commenting to this issue) overreacting, while some may find their comments okay, while there are others who may find it more than okay. And I don’t know if you’re one of those people who find reacting/opposing to the said matter already an overreaction (I think you get what I mean). OR expressing hurt feelings OR firmly believing that the show needs to apologize an overreaction too. OR maybe because there are sooo many people commenting at a short span of time that you/other people are overwhelmed and think that Filipinos are already overreacting, even if the content of what they’re saying are just fine and most of them just commented once. Based from the comments I’ve read here and some in youtube, I think they’re just okay except on those who use unnecessary and foul words like fuck, dick, etc. Well I think on the latter part of what I just said, we are in mutual terms.
I think those words are really out of the line, and are overreaction. I also think if these people, including me, keep repeating the same topic over and over again until next year, that’s really overreaction! If that happens, I’d totally agree with you that these people are overreacting, and it will do us no good. But the thing is, this thing is just new. Just let each Filipino who wants to comment say their pieces. In my point of view, I think this is good because it shows that there are still many Filipinos who care and take pride for this country, and are not apathetic. I’d be worried if not even one would stand up for our country. It really depends on how you look at it. Hopefully and I believe, this will not continue until next year or even next month. Anyway, the comments here weren’t the ones used by our government or the PMA to write to ABC Network.
And oh by the way, you also keep on emphasizing the phrase “SOME med school in the philippines.†I would just like to comment on that and I hope you wouldn’t take this personally. I think you’re using it in a different context from what Teri Hatcher wants to imply. You’re using the meaning “being an unspecified number or quantity” of the word “SOME”. But the word “SOME” has a lot of meanings, and one of them, according to Dictionary.com, as “being an undetermined or unspecified one” or “unknown or unspecified by name” which I firmly belive is the one being used by Hatcher. I think you wouldn’t expect Hatcher to know the name of any med school in the Philippines or any school/university in the Philippines for that matter. Given on how she said the line, I think it’s quite obvious that she’s not referring to any specific fraction of the total number of med schools in the Philippines. It’s pretty obvious that what she wants to say is that the doctor can’t be trusted if he graduated from a med school (whatever the name is) as long as it’s in the Philippines.
With regards to your story, I don’t know what your main point is. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I can only guess that it is that you chose not “to retaliate, not to squeeze an apology from that guy and jeopardize your career in the process.” I think that’s a good decision on your part given the situation, and in the individual setting. But you see, it’s different with regards to a national setting, and when it’s being said in worldwide TV. But as you can see from the latest happenings, we were able to “squeeze” an apology from ABC Network. I perfectly agree with Ives that we should stand up against insult/nasty remark/whatever you may call it with regards to our country MOST ESPECIALLY IF IT’S NOT TRUE. Being vocal but not to the point of refinement’s nonexistence and just disgrace ourselves. If we’ll not be vocal about it, otherwise, it will become a habit, and any negative thing said upon us will be imprinted, over time, not only in the minds of Americans and other Filipinos, but also in the minds of other nationalities. I know this for a fact because it is based from experience too. When I was younger, I’ve experienced harsh ridicule and teasing from some of the bullies who were my classmates in school. I didn’t retaliate/stand up for myself at first and for a long time because of different reasons — either I was afraid, or don’t know what to say, or I really know who I am so what they say are insignificant, or I find the bullies not worth of my time and energy, etc. It will come to a point that it will become tiring, and will have negative effects on you or the people around you, so I finally decided and learned to stand up for myself, and little by little, the bullies stopped teasing. So I really think it’s just right that our government and the Filipinos out there will stand up for themselves and for our country especially with regards to this issue. We just need to do it in a civilized way. But based from the latest events, I think the government, the private sector, and of course, the Filipinos, did pretty well.
October 5th, 2007 at 8:28 am
Hindi ko alam pre but I think your stunt is ment to inform people that you exist! How can you be so stupid? Of course we make fun of Americans and their antics but we dont broadcast it around the world! It’s a pity that you pretend that you were not affected by the events. I guess you are one of those “American Wannabe”! What A Loser!

At dahil gusto kong sagutin mo ako:
PUTANG INA MO!

Subject: [BALITA-USA] Racially Derogatory Remarks in “Desperate Housewives”
Mr. Mark Pedowitz
President
ABC Television Network
500 S. Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521-4551
Fax No. (818)-460-5636
Sir:
In the September 30, 2007, episode of “Desperate Housewives,” the character, Susan Mayer Delfino. played by actress Teri Hatcher, said: “Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Because I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
This is an affront to all Filipino professionals in the medical field. Hundreds of thousands of Filipino health care professionals are in countries all over the world. In the United States alone, there are tens of thousands of licensed Philippine-trained doctors and a larger number of nurses. The quality of their professional training is manifested by the high demand for their services in some of the best hospitals in the United States.
For Filipino physicians and nurses to be able to work in the United States they have to possess diplomas from U.S.-accredited universities in the Philippines, one of which is the University of Santo Tomas which was founded in 1611 — older than the oldest university in the U.S. In addition to having diplomas, they are required to pass stringent licensing examinations — including English proficiency tests — by the United States government. In most cases Filipinos doctors and nurses have to take residency in U.S. hospitals as a requisite to professional licensing. In other words, Philippine-trained doctors and nurses are at par — if not above par — with their American-trained counterparts.
The Philippines is considered a top Medical Tourism destination favored by many foreigners including Americans. They choose the Philippines because of the high quality and reasonably-priced medical services.
The recent derogatory episode has created a negative impression and racial stereotyping of Filipino doctors. We deplore such generalization because it would only inflame further discrimination against Filipinos in the medical professions. Therefore, we are protesting the airing of the recent episode and future episodes which would only undermine the racial harmony that Americans of all colors have longed for. As one of the major networks, ABC Television Network has a big responsibility in amalgamating the American people — natural-born and foreign-born alike — into a harmonious society of diverse races and cultures. It is therefore imperative that you take the leadership in bringing the American people together and not inflame racial animosity and hatred.
While we deplore the airing of this sad episode, we are also hoping that you would take all necessary actions to avoid racially derogatory episodes in all your series and programs in the future. In all fairness, we ask that you issue a public apology as a sincere effort on your part to rectify a wrong.
With all the best,
Perry Diaz

well said,Bianca and Mr. Perry Diaz !
EJ, you obviously do not know how difficult we all went through, before we can even have our medical practice…
I’m challenging you to enrol in any or “some” Philippine Medical School…I bet you will also have a hard time passing first year subjects like ANATOMY,PHYSIOLOGY or BIOCHEMISTRY. Not to mention the more difficult subjects in our higher years like PHARMACOLOGY,MICROBIOLOGY, INTERNAL MEDICINE(!!!), SURGERY(!!!),PEDIATRICS(!!!),OBSTETRICS and GYNECOLOGY,EENT…etc. Until then …you can tell us if we are OVER REACTING ?!?
More often, it’s SAFE for us to KEEP our SILENCE when we know nothing or know little of something…keep your IGNORANCE to yourself !
EJ,be proud of your Heritage-be proud to be PINOY !

Ei EJ, If you want to be an opposite of Mr. Nadal and be famous online, well you’re not..Though your’re increasing(hmmm, i dunno) online presence since 1997 .. And btw, Im a MD that’s why I reacted to DH slur.. You don’t get it, huh? And besides some younger generations (especially brats with big mouths) don’t mind these things. They never had opportunity to live in depressed areas, life during martial law, and the reality of life in our country. That’s why the show is just a simple joke to them… Anyways, I don’t talk to much, but if filipinos are degraded .. I carry a BIG STICK! I’m just being nationalistic which nowadays, a very few kababayans practicing it.. well we can see some of them here… Salamat and btw EJ silent waters are deep…
October 5th, 2007 at 3:07 pm
DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMILY MEMBERS THAT ARE DOCTORS? DID THEY GRADUATE IN THE PHILIPPINES? LIKE MANY THAT COMMENTED ALREADY, I HAVE FAMILY THAT ARE DOCTORS AND I JUST APPLIED FOR SCHOOLS IN THE PHILIPPINES FOR PHARMACY SCHOOL…AND AFTER WATCHING THAT… ALONG WITH MANY OTHER PINOYS, I WAS VERY OFFENDED.
MANY PEOPLE ARE JUST SAYING,”IT’S A JOKE”…BUT WHO’S LAUGHING? CAUCASIANS AND AFRICAN-AMERICANS WHO ALREADY THINK WE’RE A BIG JOKE?
OTHERS ARE TRYING TO EXPLAIN THAT SUSAN MAYERS(TERI HATCHERS CHARACTER) DIDN’T MEAN ANYTHING BY THE COMMENT, BUT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT SHE MEANT.
AND FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU…WHO THINK PEOPLE LIKE ME ARE WHINING ABOUT THIS…GO SPEND YEARS OF YOUR LIFE STUDYING TO BE A DOCTOR…HELP DYING, SICK PEOPLE….THAN HAVE SOME SKINNY ACTRESS AND PRODUCERS AND WRITERS WHO PROBABLY DIDNT GO TO SCHOOL AS LONG AS DOCTORS DID BASICALLY SAY THAT YOUR DIPLOMA FROM THE PHILIPPINES ISNT GOOD ENOUGH.

Ha. This makes me laugh. This is obviously a sick endeavor to garner attention and fame, just like that Chris Crocker scandal.
Well, hope you’re satisfied now. You sacrificed your nationality for your own horrid pursuits. Good luck with this; may karma strike you when you are not aware!
October 5th, 2007 at 6:13 pm

(In English, so that an American may read as well.)
The producers should have been careful with their script considering that some “red necks” who watch the show would really think that doctors from the Philippines are incompetent. But come to think of it, this may have been a reflection of how Filipino doctors are doing in the U.S. Maybe one of the producers had a bad encounter with a Filipino doctor. Or it may be a reflection of how American doctors are threatened by Filipino doctors. But even so, it’s not enough reason for the producers to add those lines to the script considering how Filipinos are marginalized in the U.S and considering how those lines are an over-sweeping generalizations of Filipino doctors. It’s not really double-standards because if a Filipino show would attack on the U.S., the U.S. wouldn’t care because they know how superior they are while us Filipinoes are very much offended by any derogatory message because we really have to take care of our image. We haven’t proven much yet in that field even if there are a multitude of doctors and nurses in the U.S. We are struggling in the process. And these statements wouldn’t help at all.

Dear All,
All your opinions have good points, i respect all that, however, I hope someone from the Philippine goverment (someone who cares) can share this incident to all our countrymen and start something to awaken our leaders and citizens to somehow start now, (i mean now) to do each share to alleviate our economic status. Each one of us has the responsibility and obligation to build our country. Come on people, do something good for yourself and for the country. Make yourself useful…my point is ..there are so many stand by’s sa kanto na walang magawa, however, we have abundant land and soil to plow and to grow crops…. I believe when there is over supply of kamote, kangkong, corn, potatoes, other, etc.. You do not need cash money to live… People in the early times had no money, but they live in luxury of fruit, vegetables, fish, etc..etc… For as long as there is huge poverty in the Philippines, crime, and peace and order is always a threat. Let’s educate our stand by’s to do something worthwhile. The government should look into this and act now. Make it a policy “to make every adult citizen to be useful”. For as long as the Philippines is in poverty.. you cannot stop things like these to occur from time to time… Being a doctor in the Philippines is not that easy.. you need lots of perseverance, courage and sacrifice in order to attain this profession…And I salute all the Filipino medical workers, as for me, based on my personal experience, they give life and hope to the sick!

YES!!!!! Thank you for having the balls to post that vid on youtube.
I remember back when Dave Chappelle left his show went to South Africa. There was a rumor that he went there to go to some hospital. He cleared up that rumor by stating, “Why would I seek medical care in South Africa, when I live in America.” Was this a knock on the quality of hospitals in South America? Sounds like it to me, but where’s the uproar.
I think people are reading way to much into that line. I don’t think it had anything to do with the quality of doctors and nurses. The Philippines has great med schools, but I’m pretty sure that there some bogus ones, too. I’m pretty sure that there are bogus med schools in America. You could also get bogus medical license from anywhere. The line could’ve been said from anywhere, Canada, Nebraska, Puerto Rico. And why blame Teri Hatcher. She didn’t write it. She didn’t say it, her character did.
I understand why people offended, but there are bigger battles to be fought. The H&M Store Racist Case in Chicago, for example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57Arq5AEHmA) is something that needs to be addressed, and this Desperate Housewives thing is taking away from it.
I keep reading comments like:
“You fucking Suck!”
“Suck cock!”
“You’re going to burn in hell”
“America Sucks!”
If this is the way you show your “pride” then you must not have much else to show. Way to wave that flag people! We should all be proud.
EJ Says: Touché, m’sieu! Merci beaucoup.
October 6th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Hi Ej!
I only have one thing to say, I enjoyed reading most of the comments above:P
“I THINK THE NEXT BEST THING TO SOLVING A PROBLEM IS FINDING SOME HUMOR IN IT.”
“The way is long - let us go together.
The way is difficult -let us help each other. The way is joyful-let us share it. The way is ours alone…let us go in love”
“Humor is a proof of faith”
“Do not take life too seriously;you will never get out of it alive”
Salamat and God bless us all,
E

the sad thing is, YOU don’t know what you’re talking about. this is not over reacting. what they did to us Filipinos was pure unadulterated insult. and it’s not even the lack of humor. it’s humor crossing the line. hope you regret that stupid response you did. that response was another added insult to all Filipino students. mahiya ka naman.
October 7th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Whiners? Man, your response to this episode is downright insulting. If those who cared did not react the way they did, you think ABC would have issued an apology?
October 7th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
What most filipinos did is just an ordinary reaction to a verbal assault on the Filipino as a race….it is definitely not an acceptable joke to look down upon professionals in the medical profession where trust and confidence of patients are hard-earned…….it is a different thing when we are insulted via top-rating shows like Desperate Housewives and the fact that it is the competency of our Filipino doctors there that was the point in issue and not just some “use-of-scanner-idiot-filipino-guard” in a rob schneider movie. They (DH staff) not only hurt the sensitivity of the hard working Filipino doctors in the US but also the sensibility of every Filipino who felt the hardship and pain of these people in trying to do well and excel in a tough country like America. If we, as a nation, hadn’t reacted to Teri Hatcher’s line, I wonder what other disparaging lines in that sitcom they have ready not just for Filipinos but pointed to other race as well!….this is not a close call for us Filipinos, but this is a mind-opener to those insensitive, ignorant, baseless and irresponsible writers in their show to be careful next time. We owe it to our country dude….respect….and not that silly american show can tear our race down…..joke or otherwise.
October 7th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
No wonder we get insulted by many. Most of us are too narrow minded. I cant even read most of the comments, just doesn’t make any sense at all. Firstly to that call centre guy, you must be a newbie. There’s a lot of ways to handle people but I do understand your point. In time you will as well. Secondly to that person who said that I should’ve stood up to that british guy, well again that’s my own perspective. I did that once to my Ops Man believe me, I was just thrown to jail. I learn from my past and for me there’s far more better things to debate about. You must be just bored with your life and have nothing to do hence the fuss. I’m not even commenting here to start an argument but apparently most of the whiners are violent about it. I’m proud to be a filipino and being an open mind doesn’t mean I’m not. Try learning other cultures then you’ll find out. Pure Ignorance that’s all I can say.
October 7th, 2007 at 9:46 pm
ej padero is a sick filipino who wants to become and call himself a damn american, or his just using this issue ( teri hatcher’s line) to promote his damn website, ur sick, filipino hates you!!!!!!!! YOUR NOT A FILIPINO
October 7th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
[...]If someone were to insult the cuisine of every country in the world, Filipinos are probably the first and, most likely, the only ones, who would cry foul… en masse![...]

Hi, everyone. Especially those “pearls among swine”. I’m sure you know who you are, so I don’t have to enumerate.
It is moot to hope that even the tiniest glimmer of enlightenment will dawn on those who will never, ever know any better (or refuse to). They either can’t, don’t, or won’t. This thread of comments is testament to just that. But hey, I tried.
However, I am definite that my trying to make our stand on this issue easier for the others to grasp will simply be adding fuel to a fire I do not need. I have wasted enough of my time on this. So here, I leave this thread to those who still have a taste for it, be you a pearl or swine.
Maybe I will try again when I feel up to it, possibly on a different topic I find interesting. Hopefully, it will be one that does not attract individuals I would rather do without.
Thanks for your time! ¡Hasta luego!
October 8th, 2007 at 3:23 am
I didn’t want to post any comment actually but while I was reading the comments on your blog I got seriously appalled by the way some of the visitors of your site claimed their roots of being a Filipino and then post nauseating remarks. The same is true for those who are crying foul over the bigoted remarks and then discriminate the “Probinsyanong nagtitinda ng balot sa Cubao†and then later on claimed that they’re wasting their time because you’re not an Atenean. So, this is how we wave our flag to the world huh?
EJ Says: Oo nga, leave the balot vendors alone!
October 8th, 2007 at 10:57 am
great EJ….very great….sabi nga if you cant stand it, then leave…bet all the remarks here, bad or good, nasty or sensible- somehow, made a mark on you….i guess as such, this would prove how positively diverse is our “Filipino culture”…Again, we are not whiners. Fact is we are underdogs who are not mere barkers, instead, can put out their fangs when thier territory is violated
looking forward to more word wars

teri is not to be blamed partly coz it was a script perfectly delivered though in insulting way!!! but you know what americans, you guys behind the “desperate” show? pilipinos are making their names internationally in a way that is so pleasing to world!!! don’t be too confident of what you are!!! f@#k y@#!!!!
October 10th, 2007 at 6:23 am

LEAVE MY SON ALONE! WALA NA NGA YANG FRIENDS SA SCHOOL AT ETO NA LANG ANG PARAAN NIYA PARA SUMIKAT. IDE-DENY NYO PA?
STRUGGLING DIN YAN SA SEXUAL IDENTITY NYA. ONE TIME NAKITA KO YAN NA HUMARAP SA SALAMIN AT NAGPRE-PRETEND NA SIYA SI TERI HATCHER. IDOL NYA KASI YON. LALO NA NOONG NAGING SI LOIS LANE SYA. SECRETLY IN-LOVE KASI ITONG ANAK KO KAY SUPERMAN.
KAYA UNAWAIN NYO NA LANG SIYA, PLEASE!!!
HE REALLY MEANT NO HARM. DI NA NGA SIYA MAKATULOG DAHIL SA SOBRANG SASAMA NG COMMENTS NIYO DITO. NAGSISISI NA SIYA KUNG BAKIT NAG-POST SIYA SA YOUTUBE AT INSTANTLY THE MOST HATED MAN SIYA IN THE PHILIPPINES.
EJ, ANAK. DON’T WORRY. YOUR FATHER KNOWS ABOUT YOU. HINDI SIYA GALIT.

Un-be-lievable. So is this what a majority of us Filipinos have been reduced to? Bravo!
Do yourselves a favor and take your genes out of the global pool. Please.
If you know this does not pertain to you, whether you agree with me or not, then you aren’t one of the many little minds who have just demonstrated what a waste of life they are.
This is so last week’s tabloid news. Stop revolving your puny world and tiny brain around it. Get a life. Move on.
October 11th, 2007 at 5:25 am
Your sick man! You need to see a psychiatrist. You might have a Bipolar Disorder. Manifested signs and symptoms includes: feeling of grandiose, Agitation, nervousness, irritability, feeling edgy, short-tempered, Feeling you can ‘do no wrong’, inflated sense of self… You need to get a life man! Get a sleep! That’s what you get in Call Centers as Agents.
EJ Says: Yeah, I’m talagang crazy! Like I said, get a life. You should do what the Scarecrow did, too.
Thanks for the hits! Tambay ka na ba dito?
October 11th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
(sorry ej to use your site)
hi TRISKELION,
bored with my life??? it’s like saying wala akong magawa at sumulat ako dito para magpa-cute-AYOS YAN!…hmmm believe me am at my prime:) You’re losing the point, perhaps that’s the way you handle things or as you have said your “perspective” but bet, you learned from the experience the wrong way :(…are you saying among the many like ej, you and the small # of conformist are the only open-minded people??? hahahaha now that’s funny, am really laughing hard :(…..you maybe open-minded as you may claim you are but not sensible enough to know the real values you’re giving up……..:(…let’s stick to the fact, you feel you’re open-minded because you have a different way of dealing with things? but for me eto lang yan: YOU ended up in jail and way still wasn’t able to achieve what you fought for (stand and fight-which you said you did once) and jus simply stop to pursue since you’re thinkin wala namang mangyayari, hehehehe too bad! a better word that would fit a person like you is “quitter”:(, a passive fella na ayaw maghirap at kaya nagtatago na lang sa sinasabi mong karakter na pagiging “open-minded”…..an added disgrace hayyyyyyyy…..minsan ang hirap pala maging relativist, ok na sana coz ive said i understand where you people are coming from, kaya lang sabi nga moral ethics might be at stake at times:)….di bale, i’ll repeat “perspective” mo yan eh, dun ka masaya eh:) AND again am not a whiner, guess am a person who’s trying to learn and adapt to the different cultures you’re saying am ignorant of coz otherwise i might just have to accept that you’re really the type of “open-minded” people that world needs….hay poor world pag nangyari yon….
EJ Says: Hi, Ives. Hey, no problem. People like you and Triskelion, who know how to keep good composure and a civilized atmosphere, are always welcome.
October 11th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Regarding your comment to #73, you said, “id rathrou’d rather stay this way.”
October 12th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
oi bakla…

EJ Says: Haha! Na-adik ka na dito ah. Sige lang, balik ka lang ng balik. Crush mo na ako ‘no? Aminiiiiin!
October 13th, 2007 at 7:38 am
October 13th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Anger is as natural as breathing and reading some of the comments = PURE ANGER… which is such a waste of your precious time. OMG!
I guess, go ahead, if it makes you feel BIG and ALL THAT! OMG!
UNBELIEVABLE! I think it’s time to move on and get over THIS?! I’ve never seen so much drama out of a “stupid mistake”. COULD YOU PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME - WHO DOES NOT MAKE A MISTAKE?! NOBODY NOBODY NOBODY NOBODY IS PERFECT…No such thing!
SINO KAYA SA ATIN LAHAT NA WALANG NASASABING MASAMA OR MALI MINSAN. I think we should all look in the mirror… WAKE UP PEOPLE! Tama na ang pagigining HIPOKRITO.
Ano ba yan?!
I praise God for our differences. I believe this is how HE guide and teach us RESPECT.
AND NO I AM NOT SAYING TO LET THE WORLD INVADE YOU…
I think we all need to take a moment… REALLY, NO SERIOUSLY - what are you all trying to accomplish here???? Make Ej realize he made a mistake by saying whatever he said… who cares! I BELIEVE EJ GOT THE MESSAGE… CRYSTAL CLEAR!
I do believe that we should know where we stand in the world in which we live in…
LEARN FROM IT NAMAN…PLEASE TRY…
October 19th, 2007 at 10:26 am
Donald Trump was furious when he was insulted (made fun of) and his reputation as a businessman/entreprenuer was questioned. He was really got back hard on Rosia O’Donnell. IT WAS WAR BETWEEN ROSIE AND DONALD TRUMP. Donald Trump has a point. What oversensivity are you taking about? I hope, the analogy is sinks into your head. AMERICANS (i.e. Donald Trump) ARE SENSITIVE (have a reality check)…never insult American Health Professionals who acquired Filipino Education.
October 26th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
NARROW MINDED BA ‘KA NYO??!! ANO BANG KLASENG MAGULANG MERON ANG MGA TAONG SUMASANG-AYON SA EJ NA TO?? SI TRISKELION TRYING HARD! SOBRANG T.H. TALAGA! PAREHAS KASING LOW E.Q TULAD NUNG IDOL NIYANG SI EJ. PURE IGNORANCE YOU SAY?? WHOAAA! TINGIN KO YOU’RE OUT OF YOUR SOCIAL AWARENESS. WHAT LOW-LIFE CREATURE! *#$! CREEPO!!!
October 27th, 2007 at 10:34 am
Hello, Geanne/Irisha.
And the saga continues, I see…
October 27th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Ej I think you’re either an insensitive kind person to the flight of your fellow filipinos(kinda of i love my own self) or an ignoramus of what racism really is? or both. You poor guy, learn something about the joy of helping others. Basically we are here to help others.
March 15th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I think Teri Hatcher was wrong. She should have said, “Are those Med School Diplomas from the College of Saint Benilde?”
March 15th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Haha. You Blue Eagle you.
July 26th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Pag hilom EJ. Panguli ra gud mo sa Pinas so you will be grounded on issues about poverty and corruption! Ginoo, Pinoy pa rin tayo kahit saang bansa or planeta tayo mapadpad. I am Teri Hatcher’s fan but I think the writer is the one responsible for this and so is the director. Besides wala naman siyang political eklat, what do you expect? So pinoys, be on guard always sa mga pambubusabos ng ibang lahi kay duna kitay dignidad maskin pag unsay atong trabaho, ok?
August 11th, 2008 at 6:43 am
I am not a doctor but I am educated & proud to have been educated n Philippines. Think about this Mr EJ, whatever u think about filipinos being over reactive about the video, it is humiliating. The thing is…these people know something.
Dont’t tell me the producer or the writer is stupid enough to have that line. And for Teri, unless she is damn too to have that line said… bakit kung pakakainin ba cya nang poops dahil sa show lang, kakainin nya? Com’on…so do u?
April 1st, 2009 at 6:56 pm
I’m only in high school and this already insulted me.
Okay, maybe Teri didn’t mean to insult us but come on. She can just say a different line.
If you’re not insulted, then…I can’t believe that someone my age will say this but…remove change your identity as a Filipino and be any another nationality. Don’t claim to be one.And to think you a Filipino…
I know that Filipinos can insult too and I know I’m one of them but at least I don’t announce it to everyone especially the person I’m insulting is there. I just keep to myself and just tell my friends about what I feel.
I know there are Pinoys who loves or loved the Desperate Housewives. But the way they insulted our doctors really lost the faith the Filipino fans.
If they want to insult someone, they should have keep it private because there will be people who are not involved that will get hurt in end of this.
Trust me, everyone in the Philippines and some others got hurt in this.
June 14th, 2009 at 12:25 am
