To cap off the previous posts Resolved Question and Avoid ‘Made in China’, and find out if Anmum Materna (a Fonterra brand, powdered prenatal milk supplement, “especially formulated for pregnant women”) does or does not contain melamine, here’s a list on the website of the Philippine Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD):

Milk and Milk Products Tested for the Presence of Melamine (as of 21 October 2008)

The list item entitled Milk and Milk Products where Melamine was not Detected (Released 07 Oct 2008, posted 08 Oct 2008) has Anmum Materna Milk Powder (Chocolate Flavor) 400g on it.

So now we know the BFAD says Anmum Materna does not contain melamine. Phew! Why so specific? What about the other flavors? What about the other sizes aside from 400g? Do we take the BFAD’s word for it? What about redundant testing (like a second opinion) by another body, such as the WHO? With one question answered, here I am coming up with follow-up questions. Am I just being a paranoid father-to-be?

Note about the BFAD website: it sucks. Okay, so maybe that was harsh. Shall I just say that the website is quite, erm, “nostalgic”, “old-school”, or “outdated”? Perhaps their budget is limited and their website is not a priority. That’s fine by me, as long as they do a good job at making sure the “food and drugs” available here are safe. There’s also the other possibility of them having a considerable website budget, but the sub-standard output is the result of “other or inflated expenses”.

The Philippine government has finally taken steps to address consumer concerns that dairy products sold locally might contain the Chinese-approved chemical melamine, which boosts protein test readings – but kills or disables you for life in the process! A partial list of “banned milk products” (more like, temporarily on-hold) was released by the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) yesterday. More products are added to the list daily.

Sound familiar? Just last year, it was made public that Chinese White Rabbit Creamy Candies contain FORMALIN!

Meanwhile, the public is advised not to buy these products nor consume them. BFAD Chief Leticia Gutierrez said the ban will remain in effect until BFAD releases results of the tests in October.

Products that have tested positive for melamine have been announced almost daily in countries like Malaysia and Singapore. Why not yet in the Philippines? There is speculation that the Philippine government is still in the process of purchasing melamine testing kits/equipment.

Here’s the partial list of milk/dairy products that are to be tested for melamine from China; there are 56 so far:

I am convinced that there is a sinister plot for Chinese products to kill us all. Be it by dairy products containing melamine, candy that has formalin, toys with paint lined with lead, or unsafe cars (driving a Cherry QQ on a freeway = death wish). What’s next?

However, let’s not blame the Chinese. They have demonstrated that they are, in fact, very democratic by also consuming their own deadly products. It’s the CIA, I tell you! Operation: Global Population Control. It’s to cull the number of the masses and keep the ruling class in control.

Jam came across this gem yesterday, while researching if the Anmum Materna sold here in Manila might contain raw dairy ingredients from China (melamine! gasp!):

I just accidentally drank Anmum (milk for pregnant mothers). What are the consequences? I don’t want to have a baby.

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters:

You’ll accidentally [get] pregnant. Congratulation[s]!

Other juicy answers:

No escape this time ’round.

…it shows dat u have brilliant brain

you need to take some pill

u will lose ur koo koo bird

next time, go to giant supermarket faster and buy condom before drinking the Anmum..

the stuff from the milk will stimulate the hormone-stuffs that will produce more milk for the baby and the father

…you’ll produce so much breastmilk they’ll leak all the way out!

So anyway, it turns out that the local Anmum distributor imports from New Zealand. I hope testing is done on all products here that might have dairy ingredients from China. On the consumer level, the best we can do is educated guessing and avoidance of using products that may have Chinese dairy ingredients.

Could this all be part of a sinister plot for world domination via infanticide? It is a modern-day slaughter of the innocents. More likely, the persons involved in approving the use of melamine in dairy products from China obviously just did not or do not care if it was safe. It’s a business and the bottom line is profit – but at what cost?

Update: A temporary ban/hold on dairy or milk products that might contain melamine has been imposed by the Philippine government yesterday (I didn’t get the memo). Testing is in the works, sort of. Read more: Avoid ‘Made in China’.
