Katy Perry’s performance in Manila for her California Dreams concert tour was also on that day. She sent us her regrets, as she was unable to join our celebration.

Katy kissed Ivan Dorschner on-stage, but she says she was thinking of Johann the whole time.

A Visit to the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial

Last Sunday, April 3, I brought my wife and sons to visit the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. It’s a beautiful monument to bravery.

My grandfather, Wulfrano M. Oreta, fought in World War II. He was a Civil Engineer and an Officer in the “Fighting 41st” Division of the Philippine Army.

He was among the remaining Allied Forces surrounded at Bataan and driven to Corregidor Island until it fell to the Japanese. He suffered the infamous Death March and the Capas P.O.W. Camp – and survived to see the Allies’ return and the liberation of the Philippines.

He passed away in December 1977, a retired Colonel, just 5 months before I was born.

On April 9, our “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor), remember our troops and their sacrifices for this country. Would they be proud to see what it is today?

To a Kid, a Park is a Park

The Manila Ocean Park Oceanarium Revisited

Here’s a video of clips/recordings I took when we revisited the Manila Ocean Park, particularly the Oceanarium.

I’ve also made videos of clips from the Marine Life Show, Jellies: Dancing Sea Fairies (jellyfish exhibit), and the Musical Fountain Show, but I think this one is the best of them to share.

To think that our first-born was still in-utero in that video. In this new one, he’s now running around the Oceanarium and his mom is holding number two!

My “Banana Type” Nokia 6300

Here’s another old video I dug up from years ago.

Remember the Nokia 8110 (phone used by Neo in The Matrix movie) and 7110? Well, here’s my own customized “banana-shaped/type” version of a Nokia 6300, thanks to not one, but two drops of the rear door of an AUV (a cross between a mini van and sport utility vehicle).

What is this I don’t even…

How did it happen? I sat in the rear of the vehicle with the rear door open and I had placed my phone beside me. When I got up, I forgot my phone was still there when I brought the door down shut. The door seemed stuck, so I opened and shut it again.

Other than the broken LCD and the new banana shape, the phone still worked fine.

The video was taken on November 7, 2007.

Filling Station’s Dancing Waitresses

While in a discussion with Lira about 50′s Diner in Baguio and Johnny Rockets, I remembered I have an old video of the dancing waitresses of Filling Station along Burgos Street, Makati City.

Here it is below, dug up from the depths of my computer files and uploaded to YouTube:

Filling Station was one of my favorite hangouts during the time I worked at a BPO out of Pacific Star Building. It was within walking distance from the office, was open 24 hours (I worked odd hours), had great comfort food, billiard tables, and was a great place to relax and unwind.

The video was taken on December 30, 2007 via a Nokia 6300. Pardon the smudgy lens.

Remembering Yet Another Chance

Three years ago today, I was in a major car crash.

Surviving it was a reminder to be thankful, to appreciate all of life’s beauty – knowing better of how fragile it is; of how fleeting it can be.

It was yet another chance at life.

Don’t Drive Tired. Don’t Drive Drunk.
