Work

I had to provide details on what sort of employee background checks are performed by companies hiring in the Philippines. I found out that online searches on Google and Yahoo about the NBI Clearance and Police Clearance we use do not have (m)any concise definitions on them.

Instead, the top search results are mostly/only about the procedure to acquire them. Even the official website of the National Bureau of Investigation does not define their NBI Clearance! Wikipedia came up empty, too. So here goes my own definition:

Usually, companies here in Manila require applicants to provide them with two kinds of background checks or “clearances”. They are, an NBI Clearance and a Police Clearance.

walk awayTo achieve this, I think it may not be enough to forgive. We must also forget, because it is in remembering what has passed that we end up being sad. Sad because we cannot avoid feeling the pain again – or sad because whatever happiness we had will remain in the past and cannot be recycled.

Does man become sad because he has memory?

Pablo Neruda, in his “Tonight I can write” (the saddest lines), captures this as, “Love is so short, forgetting is so long.”

Paulo Coelho’s “Closing Cycles” goes into more detail, and just as beautifully.

One always has to know when a stage comes to an end.

If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through. Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished.

A small study sponsored by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute has found that exposure to blue light helps fend of drowsiness at night, keeping you alert.

I’ve read that the color green is the most eye-pleasing. Maybe a combination of both blue and green light would be easier on the eyes while keeping us awake? That’s what I’ve had in my room for years now and it seems to work well enough.

There’s much more than meets the eye to how we perceive light, researchers have learned in recent years. The latest revelation: blue light helps fend off drowsiness in the middle of the night.

A small study of 16 volunteers found that exposure to short-wavelength light, or blue light, perked them up immediately.

Here is a must-read for people in the Call Center industry. Definitely “work-related” information.

This is a re-post from the following sources:

  • The Manila Bulletin Online (published Sunday, February 25, 2007)
  • Surviving the Call Center

“O sleep! O gentle sleep! Nature’s soft nurse, how have I frighted thee, That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down.” — William Shakespeare (1564-1616), British dramatist, poet. Henry IV, Part 2 (1600) act 3, sc.1

DO you work in a call center? This is for you.

First, the good news. You’ve probably been hired not just for your faux North American accent, facility of speech or patience. More than those qualities, you’re working there because you’re young and physically resilient.

Second, the bad news. If you’ve been getting graveyard shifts for the longest time and if you haven’t called in sick, you will. The body can take only so much abuse. And you’re no Superman (or Wonder Woman) who can’t be bothered with the common cold, a sore throat or even the flu. In fact, if you are getting these often enough and you see everyone around you with the same sickness, you might even think it’s normal. It’s not.
